It is listed since 1995 by UNESCO as a world heritage Site for unique architectural, religious and cultural heritage, a blend of the rural and urban developments over several centuries, including the French colonial influences during the 19th and 20th centuries. however without the capital’s inconveniences of air pollution and excessive traffic congestions; it also offers a somewhat cooler climate. As the ancient capital of the North Luang Prabang has its roots in antiquity and as such offers a rich cultural history compared to the more modern business centre and capital Vientiane. The Old Town, the centre of the city, is surrounded by a walled moat and is dotted with stunning temples and historic sites.
